Throwing back to 1953, the FIBA World Championships took place, marking a major breakthrough for women as it was their first major international basketball competition.
The tournament took place in Chile from 7 - 22 March 1953.
The FIBA World Championships had 10 national teams participating: USA, Chile, Paraguay, France, Argentina, Peru, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil and Cuba. The games took place in Chile’s national stadium which was made from a special wooden platform and included 35,000 seats.
Leading all the other countries, the USA won every game in the preliminary rounds. In the last game of the final round, both Chile and the USA entered the competition obtaining 3 - 1 records. The USA was leading during halftime with an impressive score of 26-19 and managed to continue domination with a score of 49-36 in the second half.

Claiming their victory and first title, the USA clearly deserved the winning prize after an emphatic performance. The FIBA World Championships of 1953 was certainly a remarkable moment in history and marked a step forward for women in society.
