Over the years, several pieces of evidence have shown undeniable gender inequalities in sports, especially tennis.
Although there have been positive changes in this perception, women’s spotlight in the media are still disguised and are not getting the attention they deserve. Despite having a significantly higher number of viewers, women are still receiving less time in the spotlight compared to men. During the US Open 2018, the women’s singles finals had 1.04 million viewers more than men. ESPN also highlighted that women’s viewerships were 33% higher than men’s in the 2021 US Open final. However, women’s tennis competitions earn 41% less media coverage than men’s, despite the significantly higher number of viewership.
Across the media, we mostly see male tennis players and rarely any females. Many articles have shown that out of the top 10 most covered tennis players, there were only 2 women on the list: Serena Williams and Simona Halep.

The Williams sisters have played a significant role in helping women’s tennis gain popularity and grow its fandom. However, this is contradicted by the concerning amount of articles on women’s tennis that is covered by the media.
